I am welcoming the light. The longer days have me imagining bike rides and long walks, yard projects and picnics with friends.

Though the Oregon Health Authority will remove the mask mandate in Oregon healthcare settings beginning April 3, the providers at our clinic have agreed to continue to require masks out of respect for our immunocompromised clients, our community elders, and our own health in this work that requires such close proximity. We appreciate your continued care of the community of people and families that thrive at our clinic.

I've gotten very use to wearing masks.

I cannot believe it has been three years. Life before Covid seems like such a dream; a little hazy, and the timing is confused. I can't quite recall all of the details. Vivid memories get stirred occasionally, and I feel such grief and wonder.

Our lives are altered, and we have shown immense flexibility and adaptability. I am equally grateful for this marking of change, our unfurling into the new routines of our lives, and I still am ever vigilant. We are still learning so much about this novel virus, and the fact remains that masks and air filtration are effective in preventing illness.

Masks remain an effective way to reduce transmission of respiratory viruses. People are recommended to wear masks when they are sick, and individuals – particularly those with health conditions that put them at high risk for severe illness from a respiratory virus exposure–should continue to wear masks wherever they feel comfortable.

In other news, you might have noticed that my schedule often has same-week (and even same-day) availability. Many of you have gotten used to my schedule being out for weeks; however, I am keeping some appointments available for clients in need of immediate care. I look forward to seeing you! https://deepgroundmassagebodywork.fullslate.com/

In June, I will begin my introductory course in Fascial Counterstrain. I worked with a PT who practices Counterstrain work a handful of years ago and have referred many clients with lingering injuries. The work is very aligned with my current work and interests in alignment, the integration of body systems through a holistic view of and approach to bodywork, and how we can remap the ways in which we use our bodies to allow for more ease and less discomfort. I am excited to add this modality to my work with you in the coming months.

I wish you all the best this Spring. Take care!

stephanie lavon trotter, lmthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816867849642303408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3996650326782790057.post-75692607787622431182023-01-16T18:07:00.006-08:002023-03-07T18:45:56.906-08:00winter greetings
<span face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);">2022 really made me <i style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: "trebuchet ms", sans-serif;"> s l o w d o w n <span face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);"> and it has been nice to continue with slowness into this <span class="il" face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);">new<span face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);"> <span class="il" face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);">year<span face=""trebuchet ms", sans-serif" style="caret-color: rgb(34, 34, 34);">. I have been ever-more reliant on my restorative practice of walking. Portland has a wealth of green spaces and parks in the city, and nearby. Recently, I have been thinking deeply about stress and anxiety, how these states show up for each of us, individually and collectively, and the entrenching of the semantics and pathology of Stress and Anxiety. (more on these ruminations soon.)

As we are well within our seventh wave of Covid19, I want to bring your attention to my Covid19 Protocol & Procedures and share a few resources I use to understand what is happening with the Covid19 pandemic, my own personal risk, and assess ways to keep my clients at the clinic safe.

Some of you have noticed that my Covid19 Protocol (last updated 6/17/2022) is much stricter than the CDC's current guidelines. Though I firmly believe in the power of high-filter, multi-layered masks, and good ventilation, I am inches from your face for more than 15 minutes (what the CDC considers "close-contact") and I have clients of all ages, some with underlying conditions. I strive to keep each of us as safe as possible, especially when cases are increasing in the region. It is a difficult decision to make but I believe it is the safest right now to prevent the rapid and exponential spread of COVID-19.

If you have a moment today, or this week, here are some ways to advocate for our healthcare workers and all workers who are continuing to keep us safe, healthy and with our essential goods:

Write our congress people and governor asking for the safety and well-being for those working non-stop in healthcare and service industries to be considered, that they are provided the supplies and funding they need to continue their vital work:

Senator Merkley
Senator Wyden
Representative Blumenauer
Governor Brown

Help to share this message from our local Portland Garment Factory creating PPE for local healthcare facilities.

Make your own face mask for you and your household, to allow masks and other PPE supplies to go to those who really need it.

In other difficult news, I have decided to let go of my lease at my Hawthorne location. Karuna Contemplative Living has been home to my practice for nearly 5 years. It is sad to say goodbye to Hawthorne, however when it is safe to practice with you again I will be back in a new location.

Please take care and don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always here to offer self-care suggestions, and self-massage techniques. I hope you all are staying healthy, and finding little joys in your days.

In solidarity.

For your health, and mine, and the health of our loved ones and those in our community who need us to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 I have decided to close my practice until April 1st, at which time I will reassess and determine if I should re-open my practice, or postpone opening depending on recommendations from the CDC and OHA. If you have an appointment before April 1st it will be cancelled.

This is a difficult decision, and I am grateful to all of you for your support of me and my practice throughout the years. If you have the ability, the recommendation is to stay home as much as possible. However with this lovely weather, it is easy enough to keep distance from others in the garden or yard, get out for a walk, or bike ride. Please take care of yourselves, and have compassion for all beings as we move through uncertainty.

If you find yourself with some free time, you might consider writing our local congresspeople to encourage paid time off for self-employed and independent contractor workers and workers without PTO, and hazard pay to health care workers, and frontline employees and businesses like our grocery stores, pharmacies, and other amenities that are continuing to stay open and serve us all.
<span style="color: orange; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It's not hard to come back to work after time away when the rewards of this work are experiencing the progress that it allows for my clients, and me. At the end of a very full week I treated myself to a workshop this past weekend called "Integrated Embodiment". This workshop allowed me to begin to integrate more fully my own somatic work through my Contemporary Alexander practice, and my deep myofascial massage.
This work is done clothed on the table, and includes body awareness, breath and movement cues, repetitive passive range-of-motion and intrinsic muscle engagement (small structural muscles, ligaments and tendons) to help reset joint/bone alignment, proprioception (how we orient ourselves in space) and our nervous systems -which are very busy in our current world. This work is subtle, small, yet profound. It is patient work, requiring a lot of listening to your own body, and may not be for everyone.

I am learning how to relax. I've not very good at sitting still. I can keep myself busy, and master a check-list and perfectly arrange my time to fit as much as I can into my days. There are very few moments I have allowed myself to truly rest, not through the action of meditation, or Constructive rest, or the container of a nap, but just having stillness in my body and setting aside the rambling list of things-to-do. This is my radical act.

We live in a society, and I was raised within a household, where productivity and how much I do are significantly valued. It is hard to stop when you feel like your self-worth is intrinsically tied to continuing to do. As I struggle between my value and my time, time to wander in thought, to ignore the forever-long list of doing, I find more freedom in relaxing. Unwinding the impulse to continue doing allows me to slow into the taskless oblivion of living. Life doesn't have to be all of the things we do, it can also be all of the things we sense and perceive, the things we feel and find.stephanie lavon trotter, lmthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816867849642303408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3996650326782790057.post-825674058175334122019-07-01T16:26:00.000-07:002020-01-24T16:59:30.195-08:00insurance questions

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Almost every plan has an amount that must be paid into the plan before the benefits will begin. For example, if you have a $2,000 deductible you will pay $2,000 out-of-pocket before your insurance will start paying for provider visits, lab work, etc. Once the deductible has been met, or in the rare case where Massage or Physical Therapy is covered without the deductible, you will only be responsible for paying copayment or coinsurance.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Some plans require a pre-authorization before receiving Massage Therapy. Often your insurance company will use a third-party company to implement a pre-authorization. This is required to establish that the massage is "medically necessary" and you will need to provide an area of complaint (neck, back, left arm) that brings you into the office for massage. Most pre-authorizations are for a specific duration (4-6 weeks) and allow for a certain amount of visits (4-6) within that time period. Once the authorization has expired it will need to be renewed, or re-established before care can continue.

I have been practicing massage since 2010. In this time I have learned that the more awareness we have of/in our bodies, the deeper impact the work can have. Sometimes change can't happen through force, but the gentle reminder that transformation occurs in ways we often don't see. I have been practicing Contemporary Alexander since 2017 and have begun to take more courses that integrate this somatic awareness into my massage work. Many of my clients have experience this integration in real time, as I share my own practice of finding my bones, my alignment, explain self-care practices (like Constructive Rest) and commiserate on the struggle of deep movement and stillness patterning and how to remind our bodies that there are more choices for us to make in movement, that we can find less restriction and stiffness through very subtle and gentle practices of listening. I am grateful for the openness and acceptance of this subtly profound practice as it weaves it way onto my table. I look forward to sharing more of this work as it integrates into my shared bodywork.stephanie lavon trotter, lmthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02816867849642303408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3996650326782790057.post-71891006489199481142018-05-01T08:00:00.000-07:002020-01-24T17:29:37.015-08:00Laziness and our ability to be curious

We have many ways of showing up to our living. What if we strive to be curious about comfort and discomfort? What if we investigate the ways our bodies respond in situations that are comforting or discomforting? Can we give our minds and hearts a break as they are struggling to find comfort in the chaos of living? Some people suggest 'focusing on the joy', but I want to expand that to focusing on all of the feelings and sensations beyond our pain, discomfort, hopelessness, doubt, ambivalence. It is annoying to be told to try some stretch or pose or activity to alleviate this exhaustion because, I'm just too tired! However, this is a constant lesson for me: when we create time for ourselves, we find more time.

A colleague of mine, incredible visual artist and yoga teacher, Jen Van de Pol, the person who began my evening ritual of tulsi-rose tea, offered this collection of restorative poses to help combat this constant, ever-growing exhaustion.

I hope you can, as I have, rest into it to find relief.
I am a big believer in the power of a soak.

We've come a long way in the history of bathing in America. The tradition of soaking is much longer, especially in the places with thermal pools, naturally occurring hot springs. It wasn't until mid-19th century that bath tubs were common in the States, and only in for the wealthy. At the time they were mostly used for cold plunges, to 'balance the humors'. In the mansions of Newport, RI the homes along the Atlantic had tubs with salt water AND fresh water. With the ease if modern indoor plumbing, the baths we enjoy today are much warmer and an act of relaxation.

As many of my clients know, I don't have a shower only a tub. So, most nights I find myself soaking, usually in Epsom salts. A soak is part of my evening ritual, more than just the act of bathing it is my time to slow down, reflect, and be with myself.

The benefits of soaking are innumerable. I often suggest a soak to clients after sessions, to bring heat to the muscles, to help circulation. A soak in a tub is a radical act toward your own self care. To be solitary, to be submerged, to be still, to be wrapped in the comfort of warm water.

This muscle has been coming up a lot lately. Psoas can contribute to back pain that is worse with flexion of the torso (bending at the waist), or more minutely, arching of the lumbar spine. It can also contribute to disc pain, hip pain, sciatic pain, leg length discrepancy, and instability.

deep muscles of the lower back

The psoas attaches at the anteriolateral surfaces of T12, L1-L4 vertebrae spilling down the posterior abdominal wall, over the anterior brim of the pelvis to the lesser trochanter of the femur - a common attachment site with illiacus, hence the grouping iliopsoas. Psoas is one of only three muscles that attaches the spine to the leg (gluteus maximus and piriformis are the other two).

Helping to release this muscle in its tightened, shortened state requires great focus on the table. Utilizing deep breathing techniques, as the client is supine (laying on the back), I will start to apply pressure in the abdomen between the belly button and the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). With each exhalation a gentle move deeper, pushing aside the abdominal contents to get closer to the spine and the belly of the psoas muscles.

Stretching this muscle when you are in pain can be tricky. The easiest way is by laying on the back and bringing one knee toward the torso -this is activating the muscle. Trying not to push beyond, into resistance, allow the lower back to melt into the floor and for the femur to feel loose, free.

If this psoas/low back is not in a lot of pain here are some yoga poses I recommend: supta padangusthasana, virabhadrasana I or setu bandha sarvangasana.
It occurs from prolonged standing, a walking stride that strikes heavy on the heel, and improper footwear. The plantar (bottom) surface of the foot becomes inflamed (-itis), often stemming from a strain of the ligament. Pain occurs at the plantar surface of the calcaneus (the heel) and can move into the "arch" of the foot, the plantar aponeurosis -a fibrous sheath of tissue that connects the tendons of the plantar surface of the foot.

It generally hurts most during your first steps of the day, an apprehension to step out of bed in the morning and place your weight on the effected foot. It can often take time to heal. Self-care, such as stretching, icing and massage of the lower leg can help the healing process along. Below find some useful stretches:
